About this place

Namdaemun Market, with roots stretching back over 600 years, is a traditional market that draws around 300,000 shoppers a day. Spread across some 10,000 stalls and commercial buildings — 10,172 by the market's own count — it sells some 1,700 kinds of goods — clothing, eyewear, kitchenware, outdoor gear, toys, ginseng, and imported products — at prices that straddle wholesale and retail. The Gourmand Alley (Kalguksu Alley) inside the market serves hearty noodle soups, braised hairtail fish, and oxtail soup. It is a five-minute walk from Exits 5, 6 and 7 of Hoehyeon Station on Line 4, and its position beside Myeong-dong, Sungnyemun Gate and Deoksugung Palace makes it a natural anchor point for a day in downtown Seoul.

Hours
Varies by shop
As the market itself states, hours differ from arcade to arcade and there is no single opening or closing time. The merchants' association's own table shows the imported-goods and accessory arcades opening at 06:00-07:00 and closing between 17:00 and 18:30, while many of the children's-wear and womenswear wholesale arcades open at 22:00-23:00, trade through the small hours and the morning, and then shut. Saturdays see many arcades wind up around 14:00, and on Sundays the whole market is closed. Summer holiday closures are announced separately by each arcade. Enquiries +82-2-753-2805.
