About this place

Sungnyemun Gate, also known as Namdaemun (South Gate), is a National Treasure of Korea and served as the southern main gate of the Joseon-era capital city wall, completed in 1398. After most of the wooden pavilion was destroyed in an arson fire in February 2008, a five-year restoration effort returned it to the public in May 2013. Conveniently situated between Seoul Station and Seoul Plaza, it is lit up after dark. Visitors can walk through the passage beneath the gate at street level, and the adjacent Namdaemun Market makes for a natural combined visit.
